Why specialty care?
Mental health is a broad group of specific conditions. When we go to see our general practitioners for physical health concerns, that is a great place to start exploring what might be going on. A lot of the time, a general practitioner can help us with the issue, but when it is beyond their scope of practice (cardiology, neurology, etc), they refer you to a specialist.
Mental health specialties exist as well. Specialists limit the number of conditions they treat so that they can do deep training into these specific areas. This allows them to train in multiple evidence-based modalities that can have the best prognosis for the conditions that they treat.
This doesn't mean a specialist won't have a broad knowledge of other mental health concerns or won't see you as a whole person with a multi-faceted life. It means that they are uniquely poised to help you meet treatment goals in the areas they specialize in so you can resolve those specific issues that might be keeping you from living your life the way you want to.
When you are fairly certain you know what mental health condition you are dealing with, finding a specialist to help guide you through evidence-based treatments can be a great place to start.
I specialize in three conditions: OCD, PTSD, and betrayal trauma. If you feel you are dealing with one or more of these, let's talk about treatment options so you don't have to continue living your life under their effects.
